“At a more than ripe age I started piano lessons with Dr. Malan. He almost immediately taught me where “middle C” could be found, and before my first lesson was over I could even find “D.” Pretty soon, thrillingly, I could tell the black keys from the white. From thence we went on to this and that, and before I knew it I had a touch of Chopin in my fingers. I could scarcely believe it. What a thrill! And all, I assure you, to the credit of Dr. Malan, who with such good humor, patience, care, and respect for even my fumbly-fingers has opened an entire world to my reckoning.
